Why drumming works so well for team building – physiological effects that have social benefitsJason Siddall
There are many positive physiological effects of drumming. It is scientifically proven to help build your immune system and relieve stress. It accesses your entire brain, and can make you smarter, and also synchronises the lower areas of the brain (non-verbal) with the frontal cortex (language and reasoning). This in turn helps to produce feelings of awareness and conviction, and can bring on a natural “high” by increasing Alpha brain waves, allowing you to feel more calm and relaxed.
We can demonstrate why drumming is a great team building tool to use in the work place. It’s a fun activity that allows you to better know your co-workers. You can sit next to someone that you don’t know very well in the office, connect with them through the companionship of the experience. It also helps you to connect with yourself on a deeper level, and with those around you.
Drumming helps with communication among team members, as you start to support and encourage your co-workers. Workplace pecking orders are broken down and communication barriers fall away. It develops effective listening skills and is an excellent non-verbal communication exercise.
When you drum in a group, you not only get to express yourself, but you obtain feedback from the other drummers. Drum circles provide a means of exploring your inner self. It also expands your consciousness while being part of a community. This will help develop relationships among co-workers. These relationships continue into the office environment.
It’s also been show that drumming activities greatly improve morale. It helps to uplift and energise your team. High staff morale boosts productivity as employees are now relaxed and comfortable. This can help to reduce absenteeism, and creates a pleasant working environment.
Individuals participate in a relaxed environment where everyone is motivated to do their best. This motivation is cultivated by encouragement and team friendship. This definitely helps to increase productivity. Drumming helps to induce deep relaxation. You feel better about yourself and others when you are relaxed. Employees that are motivated tend to get along better.
Recent studies have proven that participating in drumming activities helps with physical healing, boosts your immune system, and produces feelings of well-being. It can also create a sense of deep relaxation. Studies show that drumming reduces stress in participants. It can even lower the blood pressure of individuals. With reduced stress, your health and happiness also increase.
Drumming also creates an interest that helps the team members to achieve their main goals together. Team building through drumming frees up the mind. With the release of tension, it is easier for ideas to begin flowing again. It also encourages the use of the creative side of the brain-right side, which increases creativity.
Drumming helps to release negative emotions. Basically you can drum out your feelings, sounds vibrate through every cell in the body, stimulating the release of negative cellular memories. This helps to lead a healthier and happier life.
